Doris was born in London during the First World War to parents Herbert and Florence (nee Hargrave)
Little is known of her early life but her father had died at some point before 1943 when she applied for
secretarial work. She was registered as living at 23 North Villas in NW1 at that time and was unmarried.
She had been to a polytechnic college between 1929-1932 where it is likely she studied a secretarial
course as was common at the time. He application form also notes ten years of clerical clerk work prior
to the war. During the war she was in charge of the dispatch of codes to the various stations and was
promoted for her hard work, being discharged in September 1945 at the end of the war.
