Liberation
Robert Syme remained a prisoner through the harsh winter of 1944–
45. His captivity ended when he was liberated by advancing American
forces on Easter Sunday, 2 April 1945.
Legacy
Syme’s experiences—documented in his diary and corroborated by
ofcial archives—offer a rare and detailed perspective on the intelligence
role during airborne operations and the grim reality of captivity following
Arnhem. His courage, endurance, and professionalism represent the
spirit of the Intelligence Corps in one of WWII’s most dramatic and
costly battles.
