Legacy
The Arnhem Bridge that he and his men defended so valiantly
was renamed the John Frost Bridge in his honour in 1978. He
was a regular visitor to Arnhem for remembrance ceremonies,
where Dutch citizens treated him with deep affection and
respect. He also attended memorial events at Bruneval.
His memoirs, A Drop Too Many, published in 1980, gave his own
account of the battles he fought, written with characteristic modesty
and humour.
John Dutton Frost died on 21 May 1993, aged 80. At his funeral,
comrades and family alike remembered a man of courage, integrity,
and humanity. One veteran said simply:
“We would have followed him anywhere.”
Today, his name is inseparable from Arnhem, where his stubborn
defence came to symbolise the bravery and sacrice of the British 1st
Airborne Division.
