Jack was a pathfinder. With 156 Squadron he took part in D-Day. His target was one of the massive
gun emplacements at the key Longue battery. As he says: I was in the front turret when I spotted a
twin-engine aircraft not far away. I had the guns trained on it when I realised it looked like an Oxford. As
I hesitated, it suddenly dived into the clouds. When we discovered on landing that we had taken part in
D-Day, I realised I may have nearly shit down a hospital plane but I will never know for certain.
