Dowlais.
He was
one of nine
surviving
children
of
Daniel, an Irish immigrant"
and Mary Ann Enon.
He
ioined
the Royal
Navy before WW1, enlisting as
a
"boy"
on 16th September 1902
and discharged
by
purchase
28th July 1909,
joining
the
RFR
(naval
reserve) as
a condition of discharge. Military number
222s70.
He
served on FIMS Suffolk
among others
(see
service record for
details).
He rnas reoalled on 13th July 1!il4 on the outbreak of WWl and served on HMS Barham.
He saw acti,cn at
the battle ol. Jutland
in 1 9 1 6

mother Mary Ann

1916
age 68.
Daniel was
admitted
to US
Military Hospital
in Leith,
Edinburgh
on 28

1918
with Influenza and
discharged to another

There were a number
of other
sailors,
also
with
Flu,
admitted from the Barham around
this
time.
After
the war Daniel
joined
the
Naval Reserve on 1't June 19i9.
On 2'd August
1919
he married Rachel Lewis
from
neighbouring Pen
y
Darren.
Daniel
and Rachel
had
one
son Richard James
born 20th
Julv
1920.
Daniel
finally
left the Navy on
8'n
June 1921. He then workld
as a Hewer
-
coal
mining.
Daniel, Rachel
and Richard
lived at
19 Lloyd St
Dowlais until
about 1925 when he moved
his
family with
that of
his
elder brother
Sydney
to Askern, Yorks,
perhaps
because
of the ec<lllomic
depression and
availability
of
work.
He worke<las
a
Hewer at Askern
Colliery.
Daniel's fatkrer
Daniel
died
on

Daniel

Daniei lived

Third Avenue.
Daniel
then worked'down

pit'
at Brodsworth Colliery near
Doncaster.
FIe had
Silicosis of
the
lung and
had to retire
from
the
pit
in
1945. He then
worked
as night watchman
at Bemburgs
until his retirement in
1 950.
Daniel

died during the
night
of 27th Janua:y 1965
aged
79
