John was the son of John and Elizabeth Sommerville who lived at 6 Bruntsfield Crescent in Edinburgh.

He was just 19 when he was killed in the Arras area just prior to the launch of the Spring Offensive in

1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial to the missing.
