John was the son of John and Mary Benton, of 13, Market Place, Melton Mowbray. He enlisted
September 1914. He was killed in an accident which saw a gas bombardment aimed at nearby mine
buildings. The phosgene gas cannisters actually landed in the Leicesters trench, killing 22 men,
including John, wiping out C Company. The majority of these are buried together at Noeux-les-Mines
Communal Cemetery.
