Charles was born in Brant Broughton to parents Fred and Susan Hagues. They resided in Ancaster
near Grantham and it was in Grantham that he enlisted for military service at the outbreak of war. His
regiment left for France on 14th August 1914, landing at Le Harve. From here they entered into some of
the heaviest fighting in the first year of the war, and it was at the battle of La Bassee (10th October -
2nd November 1914) that Charles was killed. He has no known grave and is commemorated in the Le
Touret Memorial.
