Laurence was the son of Robert and Jane Carter, of Marlow, Buckinghamshire and husband of Doris

Myrtle Carter, of Marlow. He joined Airborne Forces after he completed Parachute Course 123 at RAF

Ringway in mid-July 1944. Sergeant Carter joined the 10th Parachute Battalion and took part in the

Battle of Arnhem, during Op Market Garden. He was killed in action on the 19th September 1944, aged

24 years old. He was buried initially in the woods near the Sonnenberg Hotel then late re-interred in

the Oosterbeek cemetery.
