Life Story
Audrey Evelyn MacMillan was born on 11th May 1915 in
Pollokshields, Glasgow and she was the daughter of shipbuilder
Hugh Miller Macmillan of Helensburgh in Scotland.
She married Neil Campbell Mackenzie in Glasgow in 1944, but
divorced him and married Sir Philip Brocklehurst in Dunbartonshire
in 1952.
Audrey earned her Aviator's Certificate at the Scottish Flying Club
on 16th January 1934.
Audrey joined the ATA in Hatfield on 26th June 1940 as a private
pilot and left, as Audrey Mackenzie, a 1st officer, on 8 August 1945.
In August 1940 she was sent along with fellow pilots Audrey Sale-
Barker and Lettice Curtis to familiarise themselves with the de
Havilland Fox Moth (above), in order to become ferry transport
pilots.
In September 1941 Audrey moved to Hamble with Audrey Sale-
Barker, Lettice Curtis and 7 other women including Captain and
Commanding Officer Margot Gore and Flight Captain Rosemary
Rees. According to Lettice this was ‘about a strong a ying team as
we could muster’. Hamble was the moving ground for the Spitfires
coming out of the factory at Southampton, as well as Oxfords (twin-
engines) from Portsmouth and Christchurch, and some American
aircraft and Blenheims from Eastleigh. To fly these aircraft the
