Sidney was born in 1899 in Stonesby, Leicestershire, and was the son of George Bailey a Brickyard
Labourer, born 1858 in Stonesby, Leicestershire and his wife Rebecca, born 1859 in Eaton,
Leicestershire. His siblings were Tom, born 1893, Lily, born 1895 and Edith, born 1902, all his born in
Stonesby, Leicestershire. His brother Charles place of birth is not recorded.
Sidney enlisted in Grantham in with the Lincolnshire Regiment. H was killed in the fighting around
Ypres on 4th October 1917 and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
On Friday October 26th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the
following article under the heading. “LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWSâ€ – STONESBY. KILLED
IN ACTION:
It is with the deepest regret we record the death of Private Sidney Bailey, of the Lincolnshire Battalion,
killed in action somewhere in France on October 4th. The first intimation came from 2nd Lieut. R.
Draper, and this was followed by the official notice from the Lichfield Record Office and a message of
sympathy to the parents from the King and Queen. The deceased joined the army voluntarily three
years ago at the age of 16. Mr and Mrs Bailey have two other sons serving, Charles in the Navy, and
Tom in France, as well as two sons-in-law, H. Lovett in the R.G.A, and W. Martin in the Durham’s.
The greatest sympathy goes out to the bereaved parents.
