Roland was the son of Thomas North, a builder and his wife who lived at High Street, Syston. He was
killed in an incident of friendly fire when a gas attack was knocked off course and fell in the trench. Most
of C Company were killed in the incident, including Roland who is buried in Loos Cemetery with 2 other
comrades also killed in the attack, George Dakin and William Harris. They were reinterred after their
initial resting place was cleared after the war, and the original wooden cross was sent home to his
parents.
