George was born in Hambleton, Rutland to parents George and Susan Baines. He was baptised on the
1st December 1895 in Hambleton. . In the 1911 census he was aged 15, and registered as a Domestic
Garden Boy, living with his parents. He was living in Hamilton, Leicester when he enlisted in the army,
attesting at Kettering in 2nd September 1914, aged 19. His trade was registered as Gardener and he
was single. His military service records show George served with the M.E.F., disembarking on 8th
November 1915 at Mudros, returning to the United Kingdom on 16th March 1916. He embarked at
Southampton on 24th April 1918, disembarked Havre, France, on 25th April 1918, joined his new unit at
Rouen 27 April 1918, and he was posted to IX Battalion 8 May 1918. joined battalion in the field 1th1
May 1918, and was reported missing in action on 27th May 1918. George, like many, has no known
grave and is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial in France.
