Life Story
Frederick was the son of Elizabeth, and stepson of Charles Caldwell.
Elizabeth was unmarried when Frederick was born, and his natural
father is not know. In 1884, Elizabeth married Charles Caldwell (fteen
years her senior), and in the 1891 census Frederick is listed as Charles
Caldwell’s stepson. Frederick’s mother was born in Bilsedon, and
maternal grandfather David Zanke, was also
fron there, born in 1836 .
Frederick William married Rosina Eliza Grace
in 1901 in Melton Mowbray, in the 1901
census they had just married and were both
boarding at 20 Mill Street, Melton Mowbray
(shown opposite, although it seems that No.
20 has been knocked down). Frederick’s
trade is recorded as house painter. In the 1911 census they are living at
21 Cradock Road, Leicester (below). Frederick is still listed as a house
painter, and they now have three children, Margery Grace born in 1902
at Melton Mowbray, Frederick William born
1905 in Melton Mowbray and Louisa born
in 1910 in Knighton, Leicester.
Frederick enlisted with the Leicestershire
Regiment on 26th November 1916 and
went out to France with his unit in April
1916 after training was completed. He was
