1857 in Maidenhead, Berkshire. His mother was Ellen Mary Lovegrove,
born 1862 in Birmingham. Edward Tyler was born in the 2nd quarter of
1887 in Moseley, Warwickshire, he had one sister, Dorothy, born 1889, also
in Moseley, Warwickshire. Shortly after Dorothy’s birth the family moved
to Wales and in April 1891 the family is recorded as living at The Buckley
Arms, Mallwyd, Dolgelly, Merionethshire, Wales (still a pub hotel today).
In the census of March 1901 the family had moved again, and are running
another hotel - the Lion Hotel, Farningham, Dartford, Kent, residing there
was his father, a hotel proprietor, his mother and siblings, Roy C., born 1893
and Gerald A., born 1895, the latter two siblings were both born in Dinas
Mawddwy, Merionethshire, Wales, and Phyllis, born 1896 in Farningham,
Kent, Edward was a pupil boarder and was residing at College Avenue,
Maidenhead, Berkshire. In April 1911 Edward was now employed as an
estate assistant and was residing at Home Farm, Little Dalby, Melton
Mowbray, Leicestershire. The family of his future wife, Hilda Sampey, were
running the George Hotel, a well known local coaching Inn (shown on the
map below, with a photo of the hotel today, now ats) and the inn keeping
tradition of both families may be how the couple met. It my also account for
why both parties were so well known locally when they got married.
