The Unit diary for the date of Arthurs death records: That the unit were
ordered back to camp, and “During the 48 hours in the trenches we
had one casualty.”. This was Arthur who was recorded as dying of
his wounds so he was possibly injured earlier and was in hospital at
the time. Amara was the location of military hospitals in the area so
it is where casualties would have been brought to, and subsequently
buried.
He is buried in Amara War Cemetery in Iraq, grave XXI.C.17, although
the headstone has been reomved due to the ground conditions. Instead
he is commemorated on a screen wall at the cemetery. He is also
remembered on the war memorial in Oakham.
After the war his widow Charlotte moved to Elton near Peterborough,
close to Arthur’s father, Thomas. Arthur’s service record was destroyed
in the bombing of World War II, but his record of soldier’s effects show
Charlotte received £8/1/1 after his death.
